What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is a small titanium screw that serves as the replacement for the root of a missing natural tooth. Dental implants can be placed in either the upper or lower jaw. Due to the biocompatible properties of titanium, a dental implant fuses with the bone and becomes a good anchor for the replacement tooth. Dental implants can be used in to replace single or multiple missing teeth.

What is the process to have a dental implant?

It is usually (but not always) recommended to wait at least 3-6 months after a tooth has been removed before the implant is placed.

In some cases, there may not be enough bone to place an implant and a bone graft is required. This would be determined at the assessment appointment.

East Leigh Dental Care

Single tooth implants

This is often one of the best options to replace a single missing tooth. Unlike a denture, the implant is fixed, and unlike a bridge, it does not fix onto an adjacent tooth which may cause damage to this tooth.

Multiple tooth implants

In some cases, two implants can be used to replace three or four teeth. This depends on the exact size of the gap and the quality and size of the bone available.

Denture stabilisation

At East Leigh Dental Care, we help patients regain confidence with denture stabilisation using dental implants. Traditional dentures can slip or move, making eating and speaking difficult, but implant-supported dentures are securely anchored, giving you a stable, comfortable fit.

Bridges of any span

At East Leigh Dental Care, our dental implant bridges offer a strong, long-lasting solution for replacing multiple missing teeth, no matter the size of the gap. Unlike traditional bridges, implant-supported bridges do not rely on neighbouring teeth for support. Instead, carefully placed dental implants provide a secure foundation, allowing us to restore anything from a small gap to a full section of missing teeth with excellent stability and comfort.

Overdentures

Overdentures are removable dentures that are securely supported by dental implants, offering a stable and comfortable alternative to traditional dentures. Unlike standard dentures, implant-supported overdentures stay firmly in place, reducing slipping or rubbing and improving your ability to eat, speak, and smile confidently.

Matthew’s Bio

Diploma in Restorative and Implant Dentistry (Dip Imp Dent)

Matthew qualified from the University of Sheffield in 2010. During extended professional training, he worked in hospital and community posts to widen his knowledge and skill set. These involved hospital ward and theatre work, as well as special care, paediatric, and restorative dentistry. Since 2012, he has worked predominantly in private practice and bought East Leigh Dental Care in 2018.

First and foremost, he is keen on providing a caring and bespoke service. He has worked with very nervous patients throughout his career and really enjoys helping them have positive experiences. Prevention of dental disease is key, and he will spend a lot of time with you on the preventive advice and actions needed to help secure your dental health and ensure a lifelong smile. Implants are one of the treatments he loves to provide because they take you on a journey to restoring your confidence and smile. Many of his patients find this life-changing. He has completed extensive 1-2-1 training in implantology and holds a diploma in implants. He is now studying for his MSc, which he plans to complete in 2026.

He has a keen interest in restorative and cosmetic dentistry, orthodontic tooth straightening, and Cerec ceramic restorations (immediate crowns, inlays, and bridges). Numerous courses have been completed to acquire and update these skills. In particular, he enjoys placing crowns or inlays to enhance the durability and longevity of teeth. Cerec treatment is incredibly convenient and comfortable for you as he does not have to take a traditional impression (mould), but instead he will use a scanner and provide the restoration within an hour (or sometimes within a few hours if longer is needed) without the normal 1-2 week delay at the dental laboratory.

Between 2015 and 2018, Matthew was also a member of the General Dental Council’s Fitness to Practice panel, where he sat on Committees that heard and decided cases involving fellow dental registrants. He paused this work to focus on the practice.

In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with his son, his wider family, and his two dachshunds. Travelling and the theatre are also keen interests.
